Nature Time Oakland prioritizes the health and wellness of our teachers and families. We want to families to be aware of potential risks in the forest so that we may feel confident and empowered while taking a preventative approaches to children’s safety during our school days. Below you will find some answers to commonly asked questions about of school and camp days, which take place entirely outdoors.

We are prepared for warm weather with heat covers, ample shade from surrounding trees, and cooler spaces for breaks
We request that children come with sunscreen already applied. We provide an extra bottle for reapplication.
We adjust activities. On hot days activities are adjusted for comfort, and additional water and ice water are readily available.
Socially-distanced mask breaks. Children are welcome to take socially distanced mask breaks as needed.

We provide a small outdoor potty for children comfortable with outdoor use, as well as nearby bathrooms.
The rest areas also have water refill stations and are accessible along our hiking trails
A handwashing station is available on-site for children to wash their hands after using the outdoor potty and before each mealtime.es here

Rainy days are a unique and joyful experience for learning and exploration. To fully engage in wet weather, appropriate gear is crucial.
We create rain shelters, provide warm tea, and use protective gear to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience for the children even in wet weather.
If adverse weather persists during our school day, Nature Time teachers use protocol to guide their groups safely to our designated pick up location to continue their school day, ensure children’s warmth and security, and contact families.

Teachers always check each learning environment and bring awareness to hazardous plants and other potential risks to our play and learning spaces.
We educate children about wild mushrooms and other powerful plants as homes and food for other wild animals.
Ticks can be present throughout the year, and we consistently check for ticks during/after each school/camp day.
