Family Circle Forest School
Family Circle Forest School is led by Ashley Karell, a devoted forest school teacher with years of experience guiding children through various stages of development amidst the wonders of the outdoors. Our approach is rooted in appreciating the beauty of nature's seasonal transformations and strengthening the bond with the natural world. Nature provides an inclusive space for all expressions of energy and emotions. Our teaching practices at Family Circle Forest School reflect back to the children the inherent enthusiasm, love, and creativity that they share with us.
Celebrating the gifts of each child, the learning spaces are co-created by uplifting the students' voices, hopes, and interests. With the forest as our classroom, our small groups of students engage in hands-on learning among bay laurels and coast redwood trees. Our small student-to-teacher ratio offers us an opportunity to move at the pace of our youngest child while still providing opportunities for our older students to challenge themselves physically and artistically, and supports their developing curiosity and attention. The play-based learning environment not only encourages creativity but also provides a platform for older students to build confidence and share their skills with their younger companions. Simultaneously, the younger students eagerly observe new possibilities and approach personal milestones, like the thrill of tree climbing.
During our school day, children are welcomed into an artistically rich, musically vibrant, and literacy-engaged environment that integrates into our daily rhythm. Our art and writing table offers a therapeutic space for communication and self-expression that remains open throughout our day. It's a special place where children feel privileged to share about themselves and their daily lives, creating beautiful moments of commonality and affirmation. At Family Circle Forest School, we cultivate a bond with families that centers the well-being and inherent goodness of each child. In this collaborative environment, curiosity and exploration thrive, laying the groundwork for a lifelong love of learning.

Mornings are a time for gentle play, snack, and introducing the day’s art offerings. After snack, the children enjoy a large window of play before a communal lunch time. During this time teachers offer skill-building activities through crafting, nature walks, and inquiry-based learning. Lunch is a time for reenergizing, rest, and regrouping. Children are encouraged to share their experiences of the day during this time or listen along during story-time. At NatureTime, we have a rotating library of books that is changed out every few weeks with the children’s input. After lunch, children are invited to join in some more gentle play, finish up their art projects, and rest. At pick-up, teachers greet parents with some reflections and observations of the day.
